Saskatchewan Polytechnic is located on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 Territories and the homeland of the Métis people. Indigenous students are an important part of Sask Polytech’s community and make up 19 per cent of its student population. Sask Polytech actively works to recruit and retain Indigenous students, help them feel welcome at all campus locations and integrate Indigenous ways of learning into campus life and programming. Using the Indigenous Role Model calendar as a case study we will explore:
1- Indigenous Communications & Marketing best practices.
2- Best practices for repurposing print materials digitally.
3- Successes and challenges of publishing the Indigenous Role Model calendar.
Deanna Speidel is nêhiyaw iskwêw, from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation on treaty 4 territory. She has a wealth of experience in leadership and expertise in understanding Indigenous cultures, protocols and ways of knowing, that support Indigenous initiatives. Deanna received her Bachelor of Indian Social Work through the University of Regina (SIFC). Since that time she has been working within the education systems focusing her career on the improvements of Indigenous student success.
Deanna is currently the acting director of Indigenous Strategy at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, which is situated on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 territories, and Homeland of the Métis people. Sask Polytech is committed to the renewal of relationships miyo wahkohtowin with our Indigenous communities. For Sask Polytech, this means we must integrate Indigenous ways of being, knowing, teaching and learning in everything we do.
Brianna Bergeron is a goal-oriented communications professional with ten years of experience leading communication strategies, implementing social media campaigns and developing media relations tactics. Brianna’s work with the Indigenous Strategy team at Sask Polytech has received two awards for best communications initiative and best community outreach initiative. Brianna has been the communication strategist at Saskatchewan Polytechnic since April 2015. Prior to joining Sask Polytech Brianna worked at KPMG and BC Hydro. Brianna has a Bachelor of Arts, Communication from Simon Fraser University.
